From curiosity to career: How Hailu Abay found his calling at Tracerco

Abay, a Technical Advisor in our Reservoir business unit based in Norway. His journey, from academic excellence to hands-on innovation, embodies the values that make Tracerco a truly exceptional place to work.

With a PhD in Petroleum Engineering and over a decade of experience in chemical tracer technology, Hailu’s career has been shaped by a deep curiosity and a drive to solve complex challenges.

“After completing my PhD, I joined a tracer technology company in 2011, and I have been fortunate to continue working with this fascinating field ever since,” he says.

Today, Hailu supports inflow, interwell, and frac projects across the globe, combining technical expertise with a human touch.

“I’ve genuinely fallen in love with tracer technology, its complexity, versatility, and the unique insights it provides continue to fascinate me,” he shares. "Our chemical tracer technology delivers essential insights into fluid movement in both conventional and unconventional reservoirs, accurately tracking water, gas, and oil flow," he added.

But it’s not just the science that motivates him, it’s the people.

“Meeting customers in person, listening to their challenges, and helping them find effective solutions is the most rewarding part of my job.” His approach is grounded in empathy and thoughtful communication. “Active listening and knowing when to engage, often after a well-timed moment of silence, are the skills I use most.”

One of Hailu’s most defining moments at Tracerco came during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. With travel restrictions in place, UK engineers could not support a critical project in Norway.

“I had designed the project both technically and commercially, and with no other option, I carried out the chemical tracer and carrier installations myself, alongside one member of the Norway team. It was a challenging but incredibly rewarding experience that pushed me out of my comfort zone and reminded me of the importance of adaptability and teamwork.”

Outside of work, Hailu recharges through running, enjoys early mornings with a strong coffee, and finds inspiration in travel, especially to Cape Town, South Africa. He is also a fan of aviation apps like Flightradar24 and is always open to discovering new talents (often spotted by friends before he notices them himself).
