Tracerco is proud to spotlight Max Smithson, a Software Apprentice in our Process Diagnostic and Innovation (PD and I) Department, whose journey is a brilliant example of how curiosity, hands-on experience, and a supportive environment can shape a rewarding career in technology.
Max’s path began during college, where he completed two work experience placements at Tracerco, first a three-day introduction, followed by a six-week internship. These early experiences sparked his interest in software engineering and gave him a real-world glimpse into the industry. After college, Max joined Tracerco full-time while simultaneously pursuing a degree in Software Engineering at university, balancing academic growth with practical application.
Before stepping into the tech world, Max also spent two years working at McDonald’s, where he developed strong communication and time management skills, qualities that continue to serve him well in his current role. Today, Max thrives in a collaborative environment where problem-solving and clear communication are key to keeping projects on track.
When asked about his favourite part of the job, Max doesn’t hesitate: “It’s definitely the people. Working with a supportive and collaborative team makes every day enjoyable and rewarding.”
He also shares that one of the most surprising aspects of his role is just how much teamwork is involved. “Things can really slow down if people aren’t working together. Collaboration is essential.”
Outside of work, Max has a few hidden talents and hobbies that might surprise you. He can solve a Rubik’s Cube impressively fast and has recently signed up for a 5K run, embracing new challenges both in and out of the office.
One of his favourite memories at Tracerco? “Nando’s Tuesdays. It became a tradition and a great way to bond with the team.”
Max’s advice for anyone considering a similar career is simple but powerful: “Do as much as you can in your own time and get as much experience as possible. The more you expose yourself to real-world situations, the more confident and capable you’ll become.”
If he could swap jobs for a day? Max would love to be a chef in a fancy restaurant, drawn to the creativity, pressure, and satisfaction of crafting something people enjoy.
Max’s story is a testament to the opportunities available at Tracerco for those who are eager to learn, grow, and contribute. Whether you are just starting out or looking to take the next step in your career, Tracerco offers a dynamic and supportive environment where talent is nurtured and celebrated.
