Working lives at Tracerco: Molly’s unconventional path to success at Tracerco

Molly’s journey to her current role as Administrative Assistant and Document Controller in Tracerco’s Measurement Instruments (MI) Department is anything but conventional, and it’s exactly that rich background that makes her story stand out.

Fresh out of school, Molly appeared on X-Factor, finishing 11th, and went on to work as a self-employed singer for two years. Listen to Molly, audition for X-Factor back in 2018.

When COVID-19 brought live performance to a halt, she pivoted, completing a teaching assistant apprenticeship, and working at Belmont School in Durham. Realising that education wasn’t the right long-term path, Molly applied for a Business Administration apprenticeship at Tracerco’s Process Diagnostics (PD) department. Toward the end of her programme, an opportunity arose in the Measurement Instrumentation team, and Molly embraced it.

Now, she plays a vital role supporting documentation, administration, and project-related purchasing across the department. What surprises many people about her role is just how many teams she interacts with on a daily basis.

“I work closely with Procurement, Finance, Logistics, Commercial, and Operations,” Molly explains. “There’s a huge amount of collaboration involved in what I do, and that keeps the role interesting and dynamic.”

Molly’s favourite part of the job is client communication. She often manages multiple rounds of back-and-forth correspondence, to finalise documentation.

“When I finally get that approval email, it’s a great feeling,” she says. “You know you’ve played a key role in pushing the project forward, and that’s really satisfying.”

Her current position allows her to put her key strengths to work, from communication and organisation to adaptability and teamwork. And she encourages others considering a similar path to take advantage of every opportunity to learn.

“Build good relationships with your customers, and say yes to training whenever you can,” she advises. “It builds your skills and shows you’re ready to grow.”

Graeme McGregor, Managing Director of Measurement Instruments at Tracerco, praised Molly’s contribution to the business: “Molly brings energy, precision, and a collaborative spirit to the team. Her journey shows how non-traditional paths can lead to real success, and her commitment to supporting both customers and colleagues makes a genuine difference every day.”

And if she weren’t working at Tracerco?

“I’d love to be a forensic linguist,” Molly laughs. “Helping solve crimes through language, without being near any blood, sounds fascinating.”

Molly’s story is a strong example of how diverse experiences and adaptability can create valuable careers in science and engineering-focused industries like Tracerco’s. Her journey continues to inspire others within the company and beyond.
