In this edition of Working Lives, we sat down with Russell Hodgson, Competency Engineer in our Measurement Instruments Business Unit, based in the UK, to learn more about his role, career journey, and what makes Tracerco such a rewarding place to work.
Russell plays a key role in the training and development of our engineers. With a focus on both the UK and global teams, his job involves delivering technical training, maintaining competency records, developing materials for new products, and conducting onsite assessments, all critical to maintaining Tracerco’s world-class standards.
But what really drives Russell is sharing knowledge.
“Teaching the new generation of engineers, passing on my knowledge, that’s my favourite part of the job,” he says.
With over 14 years at Tracerco as a Field Engineer (following what was supposed to be a six-month secondment!), Russell’s expertise has become a cornerstone of the Instruments team’s growth and success.
Russell’s path to becoming a Competency Engineer is a testament to his dedication to learning and development. After 20 years as a Cell Supervisor at Solartron ISA, and a stint at TTE, where he returned to College/University to earn his teaching degree and A1 Assessor qualification, bringing a unique blend of industry experience and educational insight to his current role.
“If it’s something you want to do, roll the dice,” he advises anyone considering a similar career.
“I’ve travelled to six of the seven continents during my time here. Experiencing different cultures and working environments has been amazing.”
Whether it’s delivering training in Taiwan or mentoring new engineers closer to home, Russell embodies Tracerco’s commitment to investing in people.
Outside of work, Russell’s personality shines just as brightly. A dedicated Manchester City fan, an avid XBox player, and a coffee-fuelled early bird and night owl, he brings energy and enthusiasm to every part of his life.
His go-to karaoke anthem? Uncle Kracker – Follow Me!
And when asked who he’d trade jobs with for a day?
“Assistant Manager to Pep Guardiola at Man City would be the dream. Seeing how a true genius works first hand would be invaluable”
